Has theology become the modern day Tower of Babel? It seems so, considering we all read the same scripture but all are saying it means different things. When I read the account of the tower called Babel in Genesis 11 and compare to what is happening today in our modern day “church world” I can’t help but wonder if there is not some evil work going on under the surface. When God saw what man was doing in unity attempting to get to God on their own imagination, God “confused” their language. That in no way implies that they began to speak in other languages but rather that they were confusing each other because they were no longer in one accord and focused on the same idea.
They may have started coming up with different ideas and that began to cause the progress to slow down, and ultimately cease, because to move forward could mean disaster. What if the new idea was the right one? Who will decide which idea is correct? Should we take a vote and who will be responsible if it fails? I believe Satan must have picked up on God’s plan to halt man’s progress of reaching Him, and then using this plan in reverse to stop man from experiencing God. How? Simply by getting man to believe that his theology was the way for man to get to God and not faith.
Theology was not God giving man a “way to get to Him” but God instructing and describing to man how He would get to humanity! Then man would believe and exercise his faith and God would come to the believer proving that He is the God of His Word. How? He would manifest Himself by fulfilling what He promised. When man began to question who was right and who had the right theology, then everyone was given a choice on who to follow. Man was the one leading the way attempting to lead their followers to God and utterly failing in the attempt!
Today in the modern church era there are so may versions of interpretation for any one verse of scripture, so who is correct? God is!
I wonder what would happen if we allowed the Holy Spirit to teach us and confirm His teaching with signs following for proof? I believe we would quit trying to compete with who has the answer, and begin to correct our failed attempts to reach God and allow God to reach us! Isn’t that what faith is really all about? God coming to us and fulfilling His plan of redemption because we simply believe what He said? Just a thought…
Blessings,
RB
